BUILT PROJECTS | AFRICA CENTRE STUDENT HOUSING

AFRICA CENTRE STUDENT HOUSING:
It had always been a part of the vision for the Africa Centre to have a residential component where scientists live and work within the context of their research. Through a number of programmatic events, not least of all delays in commencing construction, a residential compound had been established 15km away in the town of Mtubatuba and staff were shuttled in from here to Somkhele on a daily basis. An opportunity arose to develop a residential presence when funding for housing visiting student interns became available. The brief was for 4 rooms with shower/toilets and a communal cooking/eating space and laundry facilities. The rooms are strung out along the contour above the level of the existing buildings. A swale to catch surface runoff from the slope forms the barrier between work and play.
